Famous football coach Vince Lombardi once said, "Winning isn't everything, it's the ONLY thing!" Most people think he coined the phrase, but actually, he stole it from another, less famous, football coach, Henry Russell (Red) Sanders. John's message in this Sunday's epistle could be summed up as "LOVE isn't everything; it's the only thing," a phrase that sounds very similar but means the exact opposite. More »

Jesus is the journey and the journey's end

Much has happened in the last few weeks.
A visit by our new bishop, a confirmation service with two dozen candidates, a Holy Week rendered intensely poignant by the loss of a beloved brother in Christ, whom we commended in burial to the loving embrace of God just days ago. We have rejoiced and have sorrowed. We have celebrated and mourned. Our hearts have been broken then filled with God’s love. We have been overwhelmed with emotional highs and lows. Yet we cannot deny that they have been richly meaningful.

Important Upcoming Events in the Life of Our Congregation

It bears reminding ourselves, from time to time, that at St. Nicholas Church our understanding of Christian community is that it is grounded in two things: Love and Truth. The Love and the Truth that is Christ and is given freely to us by Christ, and the love and the truth the Christ's Love and Truth that in turn empowers us to freely share with each other. More »

As we approach the end to our 2012 Giving Campaign, we want to be sure everyone understands that each and every giving estimate is important, regardless of size. To the bankers and diocesan finance people, the more giving estimates the congregation makes, the more stable and reliable we are considered to be. To your Vestry and leadership your giving estimate, regardless of size, is even more important. The reason is that the very act of making a giving estimate is an act of faith and faithfulness: your faith in what God is trying to accomplish through St. Nick's and faithfulness along with your fellow St. Nick's community members in doing what you are able to do to make God's vision for us a reality. At noon on Sunday, September 18, 2011, more than three dozen people gather for the BIG IDEAS Summit, to break bread and brainstorm together about ideas to strengthen our parish spiritually and financially. There were a lot of very creative ideas generated, and as you can see by the parenthetical numbers to the right of each idea, some of them seemed to generate a great deal of interest. And we were gratified by the increasing number of community-building events which came to the fore over time. More »
