Our Mission

A Welcoming Community Where People Can Find a Spiritual Home

Believing that the only sufficient basis for Christian community is Christ’s love for us, our vision is to create a welcoming community where people of faith from all backgrounds can find a spiritual home. We offer a variety of opportunities to explore faith, build community, strengthen friendships and have fun. We strive for a balance of organizational structure and laid-back atmosphere where strangers are welcomed, newcomers are proactively included, leadership is shared and ongoing evangelism leads to community growth.

Our Ministries

Evangelism

At St. Nicholas Church evangelism is a way of life. Contrary to popular opinion, evangelism does not mean proselytizing. In the simplest sense of the word, evangelism means to be called and sent. At St. Nick's we believe that we are called by Christ and sent to be his representatives in the world around us. God is the one who changes hearts, not us. Our job is just to live our faith like we mean it and to do our small part to make the kingdom of God a reality by being conduits of Christ's love to those around us. We find that if we do these things, God works through us to bring people into God's emerging kingdom.

As St. Francis of Assisi once said, "In all you do, preach the kingdom of God. And if you must, use words."

Newcomer Incorporation

At St. Nick's, we have a number of activities to help people learn more about what it means to live a life of faith, both as a follower of Christ and as a member of the St. Nick's faith community:

Life at St. Nick's. A short, 3 session program designed to orient people to the life of faith, especially as it is lived out in the Anglican/Episcopal tradition generally and at St. Ncik's specifically.  Contact: Charlotte Rogers.

Hospitality

There are a number of ways of getting or staying connected with the St. Nicholas community:

Fellowship Time. Immediately after our services we always allow time for "coffee and conversation."  After the evening service we get together downstairs to the undercroft of DPC. After the morning service (second Sundays), we meet in the back of the Seneca Academy auditorium. The people are friendly and the snacks are delicious. Contact: Fellowship Co-Chairs.

Monthly Potluck. The fourth Sunday of each month is a great time to visit St. Nick's, because that is the night we have our monthly congregational potluck. Best of all: newcomers need only bring their appetites. Contact: Fellowship Co-Chairs.

The Chick's of St. Nick's. Our women's group holds social activities on a regular basis.  Contact: The Rev. Nan Hildebrand.

E-Congregation. Subscribe to our weekly listserve: "What's Happening at St. Nick's." This e-mail bulletin comes out Thursday of each week and includes:
- Our Weekly Calendar & Upcoming Events
- The Prayer of the Week
- The Scriptures for the Upcoming Sunday
- Our Prayer List

To get on the mailing list contact: the Parish Administrator.

Monthly Newsletter. "The Abbey" comes out around the first of each month and contains a wide variety of articles and information. To get on the mailing list contact: Parish Administrator.

Pastoral Care

Shady Grove.  A Lay Ministerial Team travels to Shady Grove Adventist Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, which is physically connected to Kingshire Manor Assisted Living, to conduct a “Deacon’s Mass” for the residents in two services each Sunday afternoon.
Contact: Jim Sturges.

Prayer Circle (A Virtual Prayer List).  A prayer list hosted on Jim Sturges'
www.giveusthisday.org website. To have the Prayer Circle members pray for you, e
mail your prayer request to prayercircle@giveusthisday.orgTo become a Prayer Circle member, click here.

Eucharist under "Extraordinary Circumstances".  For people who cannot make it to regular services, the Eucharist is taken to their home or hospital room at a mutually convenient time.  Contact: The Rev. Ken Howard.

Grief Support Group.  A support group offered on an as-need basis for those dealing with grief and loss. Headed by Louise Smith, trained hospice volunteer.
